AdWords can be a tricky business to be in. Some ads that we spent as little as 5 minutes on can generate tremendous income whereas ads that we spent half a day laboring over will sometimes simply sit there and cost us money.

After running a few AdWord campaigns we will generally have enough ‘feel’ for our AdWords advertisement to be able to make a success out of our online business. But in order to get enough experience it isn’t always the best thing to just try and try again if we fail.

In order to make things easier I have compiled a short list of tips and tricks on how to best run your AdWord campaign. Naturally these tips and tricks may vary a bit for the different type of products you may be promoting and nothing is (ever!) carved in stone, but these few tips should definitely help to avoid some of the potential pitfalls of an AdWord campaign.

The first and probably best tip is to do exactly what you are doing now. Read anything and everything that you can possibly find on AdWords and even read other AdWords that do well to get an indication of how things are done. There are numerous articles online that will give useful information on how the best AdWords are created.

Create keyword lists before you create your ad. By cleverly integrating keywords into the subject title or the main part of your ad you can increase the CTR (click through ratio). People will generally click on ads that contain the keywords they just searched for if they’re interested and a high CTR is definitely helpful as it can decrease your cost per clicked ad.

Surprisingly creating two ads for exactly the same product can help determine what works best. (This is called split ad testing.) This may sound like an expensive solution to testing the quality of our ads, but it will always show which approach is best. With a little bit of luck both ads will work out well and generate enough revenue to make up for the extra effort.

Continually updating the ads and keywords will ensure that the advertisements content remains fresh and in accordance with what the customer is looking for. By continually updating your ads you can potentially turn a mediocre or even terrible ad campaign around simply by changing a few words here and there or adding and changing keywords.

Make sure that your keyword lists and your used keywords also contain possible plural variations, common spelling and even spelling errors. People are not robots; the average person will be just as likely to type “affilaite” as they are to type “affiliate” and this count for practically any word. (The “a’ and the “i” is transposed. I do this ~all~ of the time!)

If your AdWord campaign is doing well be prepared to update it a little bit more often during holiday seasons. You can easily take advantage of the up-swinging buyers market in these times as there are considerably more people online looking to buy specific products.

And finally, don’t stick with keywords or ad campaigns that simply don’t seem to work. Set a specific amount of money you are willing to spend during the testing phase of the ad. If you spend that amount of money and don’t see the results you were expecting (don’t forget to tweak the ad during the testing cycle!) then it is time to scrap that ad and rethink your position.

8 Things I have Learned As An Internet Marketer

1. Choosing The Right Program

Choosing the right program to affiliate with is still a relevant way of making money on the internet. I learned not believe all the hype surrounding every affiliate program on the net. Instead I look for affiliate programs that pay at least 30% commissions and are run by reputable internet marketers.

2. Choosing The Right Tools

I learned quickly that you need much more than just a website to become successful. Choosing the right tools to optimize your internet business is crucial if you hope to succeed. Tools like auto responders, professional emailboxes, and software that help with linking and submitting your site to search engines is very important information to have. However, some of these tools can be expensive, but the return on investment is priceless.

3. Targeted Traffic

Getting the right people to your website is something all internet marketers are constantly working to achieve. In this business you find a lot of tire kickers, these are the people that may download a free product or tour your site but they have no intentions of ever buying any of your products or services. Finding targeted traffic is what you need, people that our looking for a home-based business or a product or service you are selling.

4. Quality Leads

Quality leads are very important when talking about targeted traffic. there are plenty of companies that offer leads and subscription services, and I suggest trying a few different companies out, because you just do not know what type of leads you will get. This was a powerful lesson to be learned. Search engines love reciprocal links when deciding your page rank and position in their search engine. This was an eye opener. With the right software I was able to make reciprocal linking work to my advantage, without having to manually do it myself. Reciprocal linking has helped me with my alexa ranking as well as in the search engines.

7. Finding JV Partners

Finding Joint Venture (JV) partners is also very important is building a successful online venture, in a sense reciprocal linking is a JV partnership in that you are hoping your link on someone else site will bring you visitors and vice-a-versa. However, there are also other JV partnerships available and are quite easy to find, if you know where to look ( see below). I have a few JV partners that I work with to mutually make our businesses profitable. It is the old adage of “you scratch my back, I scratch you back” where each partner brings something different to the table and combined they form a JV partnership.

8. Business Forums

I found reading and posting to business forums to be invaluable to the success of my business. These are great places to learn from people that have been doing business for a long time. I also told you about finding JV partners, well business forums is where to find people you would like to do business with. Most forums allow you to use a signature file that you can use as “free” advertising for your business.

#4 - Get Your Own Domain Name

You will need your own domain name. There are hundreds of companies that will help you select a domain name, and register it, for a nominal fee. Check with your web host first. Most offer to register your domain name for you with their package. You should always own your own domain name. Do not use a free domain name. Many sites such as Geocities, or Yahoo will offer you a free domain name, but it does not belong to you. It just doesn’t make any sense to spend months or even years building name recognition for your site, only to lose the domain name if the company who owns it changes policy, or goes out of business. You can register a domain name for as little as $8.88 per year. Domain names need to be reregistered every year.

#5 - Content for your Website

Content is King. Remember this when building your site. People browse the net for information, and you must have good content to attract and keep the attention of people visiting your site. Fill your pages with interesting content about your websites subject. If your website is about shopping, than write about things that pertain to shopping.
