For Serious Learning Fun
“Again, again! Let’s play it again!” That's music to any parent's ears. Educational toys for school-age children can turn learning from stale to stupendous. Keeping a child’s attention and interest while making it fun too is our goal. If it’s enjoyable for the 'big kids' as well, that’s a big bonus. Quality play time is worth every moment. What could be more rewarding?
Of course you want your kids to learn and be successful in everything they do. Some games and multimedia can be so heavy on the wallet and not even be worth the expense. Do you feel cheated when you’re finally convinced to spend the money only to then discover your purchase has no educative value and your kids quickly tire of it?
If buying decent and affordable educational toys for school-age children causes you undue stress, take a look at some of our ideas throughout this site and help yourself by letting us help you.
Our ideas are based around how well kids learn while they’re having fun. When playing games they enjoy, kids can tell you just about every imaginable detail about the level they’re on and how to complete it (or ‘defeat the boss’ in a video game). To make use of this correlation is invaluable, and so we search for playthings that we believe kids will find fun to play while still encouraging learning in an enjoyable way. If kids can recall what they learn from games, why not make those games educative too? Then everyone wins! Here’s the scoop…
Educative Experience versus Mind-Blowing Fun... Hmm, Why not both?
You're probably already aware that kids learn in more than one way. Some acquire knowledge and skills more easily by observing or viewing while others need a more hands-on approach. The more senses involved, the better the result. As a Teaching Assistant, I have observed that when both strategies of seeing and actually doing are combined, a child will make use of both sides of the brain and so tends to more quickly and easily grasp the particular concept being taught. Games, puzzles, and playthings are wonderful tools for helping kids to both 'see' and 'do' and therefore learn or master a skill or idea. Using this way of teaching helps kids to understand the concept, which in turn makes it a more enjoyable learning experience. When kids enjoy their studies because they can ‘get it’ without the frustration, they'll want a repeat performance. This success will help make a lasting contribution to keeping academic learning more interesting and pleasurable in later years.
We endeavor to find affordable, interactive and educational toys for school-age children that incorporate this concept of combining both seeing and doing so that there is more success with learning. You, yourself, can become involved with play at home and watch your kids learn through fun. You will know you are contributing to a well-rounded learning experience while having loads of fun yourself. You’ll also know that by participating and providing enjoyable and meaningful entertainment, you are helping to start your kids on a life-long path of discovery and fulfillment. Hopefully, when they find that learning can be fun, they'll never want to stop. There's no greater gift you can give to your child than a heartfelt desire to keep on learning and better themselves.
Just Plain Fun, Seriously
Yes, seriously fun! Movies, music, photos, and the hottest video games being played, and all fitting in the palm of your hand. The Nintendo DS is popular for gaming while the Sony PSP is one unique handheld that is great for gaming plus more awesome features to offer... much more than you might expect from a portable system.
Strategic Learning Video Games on Handheld Systems? Hey, why not?
With all the buzz these days about kids playing video games and the damage this combination may cause, it is nice to see that the game manufacturers are finally making an effort to alleviate some of the concern surrounding this subject. They’re taking steps towards making their games both entertaining and educative.
Sony, Nintendo, and other manufacturers of handheld systems were long overdue for their creation of “thinking games”. Brain Genius, which can be played on your mobile phone, is a perfect example of what the older kids might like to play these days while at the same time gaining the chance to learn and practice mathematics and language skills. There's nothing like turning a little learning into fun. Other game titles that require more strategic thinking include titles which are categorized as “role-playing” games. These games require more logic, rationalization, and precision while maintaining the play excitement kids come to expect and enjoy from them.
Let’s not forget the new Nintendo DS’ Brain Age, a brain exercising game that combines learning with amusement for kids of all ages. This game and it’s successor are each a workout for the mind and worth their weight in gold. Young and old brains alike need to be challenged and exercised to keep them healthy and in great shape. There’s the old 'fun' creeping back into making learning a wonderfully entertaining yet valuable experience.
Both the DS and PSP handheld systems are reasonably priced and new titles that are more engaging with a learning twist are coming out more and more from the game creators.
